JD Vance: "Empowered!"

Updated: May 1

JD Vance expressed to Fox News Digital his sense of empowerment under President Donald Trump, highlighting the "strong alignment" and "mutual confidence" among the senior leadership, all working toward a shared goal. Reflecting on his role as vice president, Vance noted that his responsibilities span a wide range of issues, including both international and domestic matters, rather than being confined to a narrow set of tasks. "The president sets the course, and what’s truly valuable about our team—whether it’s foreign policy or economic matters—is that every senior member has full faith in the president’s leadership. He provides clear guidance, and each of us has a vital part in carrying out those directives," Vance explained. "There’s no need for constant oversight, which creates a sense of freedom and trust."

Vance shared with Fox News Digital that he hadn’t spoken with Secretary of State Marco Rubio for several days prior but connected with him on Tuesday. "It’s reassuring to know that the secretary of state is handling his responsibilities, the secretary of defense is focused on theirs, and I’m managing my own duties," Vance said. "We regroup, brief the president, and move forward from there." He described the administration’s dynamic as "highly adaptable and ever-changing," a quality he expects to persist through the first 100 days and the next four years. "What makes this possible is the genuine trust we have in each other," Vance emphasized. He added that President Trump has "complete confidence" in his team, which eliminates unnecessary bureaucracy. "You can just focus on doing your job effectively," he said.

Reiterating his sense of empowerment, Vance told Fox News Digital that his conversation with Secretary Rubio reinforced this feeling. "I spoke with Marco Rubio about these matters yesterday, and I believe he feels equally empowered. The president not only values but fully trusts his senior team, which allows him to govern efficiently," Vance noted. "When the president can give clear instructions and trust the team to execute them, it streamlines his workload. This approach simplifies economic policy and national security efforts." As vice president, Vance said he has a broad perspective on the administration’s operations, describing the level of collaboration as "remarkable." He suggested that this degree of trust and synergy might be unprecedented, even compared to Trump’s first term or other administrations.

On January 20, 2017, during the inauguration in Washington, D.C., President-elect Donald Trump joined Vice President-elect JD Vance for a ceremony at St. John’s Church. Vance contrasted the current administration’s cohesion with past vice-presidential roles. "You hear about Kamala Harris’ portfolio or even Dick Cheney’s, where there were territorial disputes and people guarding their domains," Vance remarked. "We don’t have that. Our focus is on what the president has tasked us to achieve, and we’re happy to collaborate if it serves our shared vision."

When asked about key moments from the Trump administration’s first 100 days, Vance pointed to his February trip to France to discuss artificial intelligence. At a Cabinet meeting on Wednesday at the White House, Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, President Donald Trump, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, and Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick were present. "The vice presidency offers a platform to say what needs to be said. I pointed out that some European allies have regressed on free speech, religious freedom, and border security. Just as President Trump is addressing these issues in America, I encouraged our European partners to follow suit."

Vance also highlighted his visit to Eagle Pass, Texas, as a standout moment. "It was striking because Border Patrol agents showed me images of areas once overrun with illegal immigrants, now nearly empty," he said. "There was almost a sense of calm. Visualizing a 95% drop in illegal immigration in just weeks was powerful. The agents felt they had less to do, which means we’re delivering for the American people." Vance added, "Seeing the direct link between Trump’s policies and the resolution of the border crisis was incredibly rewarding. It was a memorable day." He also noted, with a smile, "I got to ride in a helicopter."
