JD Vance Takes on Nike's Alleged Support of Transgender Study

Updated: May 1

U.S. Vice President JD Vance is among the Republican figures expressing discontent over Nike’s alleged financial backing of a study exploring transgender youth in sports, arguing that allowing biological males to compete in women’s and girls’ sports defies logic, regardless of medical interventions.

It appears that Nike, at some point, provided funding for research examining the effects of "gender-affirming" treatments on young male athletes to assess whether such interventions could enable them to compete "fairly" and "safely" in women’s and girls’ sports. Additionally,

Nike informed OutKick that the study "was never initiated" and "is not proceeding," though the company did not clarify when these decisions were finalized. Despite the study’s primary researcher, Dr. Kathryn Ackerman, and its secondary researcher, Joanna Harper—a biological male identifying as a woman—publicly acknowledging Nike’s support, the company has remained tight-lipped about its involvement. Additionally,

On Tuesday, during an interview on "Clay & Buck" with hosts Clay Travis and Buck Sexton, Travis pressed Vance about the study and Nike’s rumored sponsorship. Additionally,

In his Tuesday discussion on "Clay & Buck," U.S. Vice President JD Vance addressed Nike’s alleged support for research on transgender teenage athletes.

During the same Tuesday segment on "Clay & Buck," U.S. Vice President JD Vance elaborated on Nike’s reported backing of studies involving transgender youth in athletics.

"Think about how many corporations, Nike included, got caught up in the cultural wave of 2020 and 2021," Vance remarked. "They assumed progressives would dominate, so they poured money into these initiatives without anticipating the American public’s backlash against such extremism. The transgender issue is deeply unpopular, especially when it involves hormone treatments for 12-year-olds, which cause irreversible harm, or forcing girls to compete against boys in sports, sometimes leading to severe injuries."

Echoing Vance’s concerns, even a prominent progressive like California Governor Gavin Newsom recently distanced himself from the issue of transgender athletes in sports, labeling it "unfair." Additionally,

This may explain why Nike, despite its vocal support for progressive causes, has not openly acknowledged its role in the study or featured any details about it on its website. The company’s continued refusal to address OutKick’s inquiries about its involvement could also stem from this shift in public sentiment.

"It’s a strong issue for Republicans because it’s rooted in basic common sense," Vance asserted. "People don’t want women facing grown men in sports, particularly in contact sports where injuries are a real risk."

Vance also shared a personal perspective on the issue. Additionally,

"As the father of a three-year-old daughter, I believe she should participate in sports," Vance told Clay and Buck. "Athletics teach valuable life lessons, but I don’t want her competing against adults. Protecting young women is a fundamental masculine instinct."

During his Tuesday appearance on "Clay & Buck," U.S. Vice President JD Vance discussed Nike’s alleged support for research on transgender teenage athletes.

In the same Tuesday interview on "Clay & Buck," U.S. Vice President JD Vance addressed Nike’s reported involvement in studies on transgender youth in sports.

Despite Nike’s ongoing reluctance to clarify its potential role in the transgender athlete study, Vance emphasized that the public deserves transparency from both corporations and elected officials on this issue, even if they later attempt to backtrack. Additionally,

"The American people have pushed back, and it’s our job to keep reminding them of that," Vance said. "The trans issue hasn’t gone away; some Democrats have just realized it’s a losing battle politically."

"If these individuals gain power, they’d push for 12-year-olds to receive cross-sex hormones and for girls to compete against boys," he added. "The extremism hasn’t stopped—they’ve just gotten better at hiding it." Additionally,

As for Nike, the company could easily address this controversy. If it played a role in the study, it should provide a full explanation. The American public is waiting for answers.

Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis by J.D. Vance is a powerful and poignant exploration of the author's upbringing in the Rust Belt, offering a deeply personal account of a community in decline. In this bestselling memoir, Vance reflects on his turbulent childhood in a family marked by addiction, poverty, and a disintegrating culture. Raised by his fiercely devoted but troubled grandparents, Vance offers a candid portrayal of the struggles faced by working-class Appalachians, confronting the deep social and economic challenges that have shaped his identity.

At the heart of Hillbilly Elegy is Vance's attempt to understand how the values and traditions of his upbringing—loyalty, honor, and resilience—coexisted with the harsh realities of economic hardship, fractured families, and a region in crisis. Through his journey from a chaotic childhood to attending Yale Law School, Vance examines the complexities of class, culture, and identity in modern America.

The purpose of Hillbilly VP is to analyze the story presented in JD Vance's best-selling memoir, Hillbilly Elegy, and then place it as the cornerstone for broader discussions of opioid abuse, trafficking, and politics, including JD Vance's likely run for President in 2028.

Hillbilly VP is divided into two sections. The first features JD Vance's story paraphrased and inspired by his own words. Then, it explores its main points, themes, and takeaways. The roles Big Pharma and unscrupulous prescription-happy physicians played in opioid addiction in the Appalachians come next. It finishes with the political impact of the Appalachians turning red for Presidential elections and JD's chances of winning the Presidency in 2028.

The second section investigates the suspicious actions and positioning of the Obama administration regarding the opioid crisis and drug trafficking.

Equal parts personal narrative and social commentary, Hillbilly VP is a timely and essential read for anyone seeking to understand the forces that shape the lives of working-class Americans, the government that seems to work against them, and the stories of survival that often go unheard.
